HBV-HIV Coinfection: Key Clinical Management Issues

نویسنده

  • Frank Trinh
چکیده

Given the shared risk factors for transmission, coinfection with hepatitis B virus (HBV) and HIV is common. HIV infection increases the risk of chronic HBV infection and hastens the progression of liver disease in patients with chronic HBV infection. The treatment of chronic HBV infection needs to be carefully coordinated with HIV management in HBV-HIV coinfected patients. The main goals of treatment for HBV infection are to suppress HBV replication, improve liver function, and minimize the emergence of HBV and HIV drug-resistance. In this article, we briefly review the epidemiology and natural history of HBV-HIV coinfection, and then we describe the current treatment options.

The Prevalence and Clinical Significance of Hepatitis B and C Coinfection

Background: HBV and HCV coinfection is common, particularly in endemic areas and among high risk groups. In this study we have investigated the prevalence of HBV/HCV coinfection and compared the biochemical and serological characteristics of such patients compare with the patients having hepatitis C infection alone. Methods: We studied 207 patients diagnosed as having chronic hepatitis C, with ...

Hepatitis B in Patients Coinfected with HIV

Hospital Physician October 2008 17 H epatitis B virus (HBV) and HIV are often found coinfecting a single patient because the pathogens share transmission routes. The prevalence of HBV/HIV coinfection varies by geographic region and risk factor exposure, but studies suggest that up to 10% of patients with HIV have chronic HBV coinfection.1,2 The impact of HIV infection on the course and outcome ...

HIV and Hepatitis B Virus Coinfection: Approach to Management: Case Study and Commentary.

OBJECTIVE To review diagnosis and treatment in patients with HIV and hepatitis B virus (HBV) coinfection. METHODS Review of the literature in the context of a clinical case. RESULTS All patients with HIV should be screened for the presence of coinfection with HBV. Following diagnosis with HBV infection, the level of HBV activity should be assessed with testing for HBeAg, HBV DNA, and potent...

HIV and viral hepatitis coinfections: advances and challenges.

With a prevalence affecting over 30% of HIV infected patients, coinfection with hepatitis B (HBV) or C (HCV) virus remains one of the most frequent comorbidities in this population, with a significant impact in terms of morbidity and mortality associated with liver disease. Recent findings in the physiopathology of HIV in the liver have confirmed that it may contribute, along with hepatotoxicit...

Antiretroviral therapy and HIV/hepatitis B virus coinfection.

Among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected individuals, the prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) seropositivity is approximately 10-fold higher than in the general population. HIV/hepatitis B virus (HBV)-coinfected patients have an increased risk of cirrhosis and liver-disease-related death. The strategy and management of anti-HBV therapy in HIV-infected persons must take in...
